What Are Solar Blinds?
Built for UV Protection & Household Comfort
Solar shades are a kind of roller shade designed specifically to block UV rays and reduce sunlight glare. They are usually made from a special polyester mesh that can capture UV radiation more effectively than vinyl or fabric.
Solar shades can let in more or less light depending on the specific needs of the buyer. This is described more in the next section about “openness”.
What is Openness?
Solar shades come in different levels of “openness”, which refers to the tightness of the mesh. Tighter mesh weaves have a lower openness factor from 1% to 4%. Medium tightness is around 5% to 10%. High openness weaves are above 10%.
Choosing the Right Level of Openness
The best openness factor for your home is a choice between how much light you want coming in versus how much visibility you want to be able to see outside. Less light coming in means less visibility and vice versa.
1% to 4% will minimize UV rays and keep your room darker. Around 10% to 14% will ensure you can see outside. 5% openness is a common choice for homeowners who want something right in the middle.
Do Solar Shades Offer Privacy?
The interesting thing about solar shades is that they offer more privacy during the day but less during the night. A tighter weave does offer more privacy.
How well you can see outside during the day is a good gauge of how well people can see inside after the sun goes down.
If you want total privacy, you may be looking for blackout shades.
Do Solar Shades Come in Different Colors?
They do indeed! People often choose lighter colors for smaller windows where they want more light and the view is less important. Darker colors are usually best for larger windows because they offer the best visibility outside.

Can Window Solar Shades Be Automated?
Absolutely. Solar shades with automation is the go-to choice for many homeowners with very large or scenic windows.
Should I Pair Up Solar Shades with Another Window Treatment?
Pairing up two window treatments can add style to any room. If you want more privacy at night time, you may want to consider pairing your solar shades with drapes, Roman shades, or solid-color shades.

Due to their vertical hanging slats, vertical blinds are least likely to gather dust when compared to other custom blinds. If vertical blinds aren’t your style, faux wood blinds are a stylish, easy-to-clean option. Click here to learn more about how to clean faux wood blinds.
