Can Blinds Can Be Recycled?

October 1, 2022

Waste Not, Want Not

If you're looking for a window treatment refresh but are feeling guilty about tossing out your old ones, we have great news for you: most blinds can be recycled!

Read on to learn if your blinds are recyclable and the next steps to take if they are not.

Plastic & Vinyl Blinds

The most common type of plastic blinds are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). This material can be recycled but only at certain facilities. You can check with your local recycling center to see if they accept PVC. If they do, simply remove the hardware from your blinds and take them to the center.

Aluminum Blinds

If you're ready to part with your aluminum blinds, you can do so fairly easily. Take them to your local recycling center or check with local companies that recycle scrap metal to see if they will accept a donation.

Wood and Bamboo Blinds

Recycling facilities will not accept wood and bamboo blinds. The reason for this is that these materials have been treated with chemicals, such as stains, varnishes, and paints, which can be difficult to remove.

If you're looking for an eco-friendly way to dispose of your old wood or bamboo blinds, consider donating them to a friend, a local thrift store, or Habitat for Humanity ReStore. You could also keep them around and repurpose them for another home project later on!

No matter which option you choose, you'll be giving these blinds a second life.
